It’s CLE Deadline Time - do you know where your credits are?

After a year of pandemic disruptions and delays, Kentucky is moving toward normal once again. For Kentucky attorneys, that means - among other things - that those long-postponed deadlines for earning CLE credits are back in force. June 30 is right around the corner. Are you ready? Here’s one way to get there: Spend a lively and productive day sharpening up your legal-writing skills, and closing the gap between what you know in your particular area of the law and how well you communicate it.

Writing coach Rick Horowitz pays a return “visit” to LBA on Thursday, June 10, with his latest edition of “More Effective Writing Makes More Effective Lawyers.” It’s a six-credit, online session that offers the energy and focus of an in-person class, but you can take part from the comfort (and safety) of your own home or office. ·

  • “This was the best online experience I've had during COVID. The class was so engaged - a fact I attribute largely to Mr. Horowitz's interactive teaching style. While I would have loved to take the class in person, this was the closest I've come to feeling like I was at an in-person event.” ·
  • “Rick was very inclusive and engaging, offered excellent writing tips and kept things interesting. Thoroughly enjoyed it.” “Thank you for your enthusiasm and encouragement! I'm already taking what I've learned and putting it into action.”
  • “Rick! He was the most amazing presenter; so easy to follow and talk to.”
  • “I will be recommending this class to several co-workers.”
  • “This was the best legal writing CLE I've ever taken.”

Briefs, memos, client letters, even daily correspondence can all benefit from your deeper understanding of what goes into successful legal writing, so we’ll examine good and not-so-good writing to see what works, what doesn’t, and why. Among the topics we’re likely to cover:

  • What should you include, and what can you leave out?
  • What’s the most effective structure for this document, and this audience?
  • Should you use an outline? Are there better options?
  • Are there ways to overcome “blank-screen panic?”
  • Could your brief be a little more...brief?
  • And do you really need all that legalese?

We’ll also take a fresh look at some of the assumptions and habits that often lead lawyers down less-than-productive writing paths. Rick has crafted his program to take best advantage of Zoom’s interactive features. And as you can see from those comments up above, he’s managed to retain much of the give-and-take, back-and-forth dynamic that has made his in-person sessions so popular all across the country. You’re sure to come away with new skills, new strategies, and new confidence. Not to mention all those credits. Sign up now, and we’ll see you on Thursday, June 10.
