This two-hour seminar will cover two emerging topics in juvenile justice:

The School to Prison Pipeline: Exploring the Legal Aspects of Exclusionary Discipline Decision makers in both educational and juvenile justice settings are responsible for ensuring the systems’ crossover youth are equitably treated. However, there is evidence that these two important sectors operate in silos leaving many students in a dual system of punishment and on a trajectory to prison. This session will explore the school to prison pipeline in the context of youth rights and discuss legal strategies for addressing discipline disparities for “marginalized” youth.

Using Developmental Research in Juvenile Defense Participants will understand key features of adolescent development, how those concepts affect a youth's involvement at different stages of the juvenile and adult criminal justice systems and how to use adolescent development arguments to advance the client's interests and the legal strategies of the case.

Speakers include: Amanda Mullins Bear, Managing Attorney, Children's Law Center, Lexington Office and Cherie Dawson-Edwards, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Department of Criminal Justice Faculty Research Fello, Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research, University of Louisville
