Moral injury is defined as the injury suffered when we have to violate our deeply held moral beliefs in furtherance of our jobs or projects. This has been studied at length related to the military and, throughout the pandemic, related to healthcare workers. This presentation deals with the ethical rules that require us to violate our own deeply held ethical beliefs to adequately discharge our duties to clients, tribunals, and others.

Speaker: Robyn Smith, Law Office of Robyn Smith
Robyn Smith (she/her) is a workers’ rights and civil rights lawyer based in Louisville.  She teaches Law Practice Management at Brandeis School of Law, and she advocates for attorney well-being, self-employment, and autonomy in the profession.  She informally mentors women lawyers who follow unconventional paths, and she has presented “How to Be What You Can’t See” to law students seeking to tailor their career paths to their unique circumstances.  Robyn’s small employment law firm follows an autonomous apprenticeship model, where associates develop management and practice skills with the goal of eventually opening their own firms, and where employees can decline participation in any matter the firm has undertaken without penalty.  Robyn is an accomplished trial and appellate lawyer, as well as an avid gardener.
