The Kentucky Supreme Court proposed new appellate rules representing a substantial departure from current practice and procedure. Unlike the current format, the new appellate rules are separate from the Civil and Criminal Rules. This program will be presented by two Supreme Court Appellate Rules Committee members who will discuss the significant changes ahead.

About our speakers:

Bethany A. Breetz is an attorney with Stites & Harbison, PLLC. Her practice focuses on state and federal appellate advocacy and complex commercial litigation. She serves as co-chair of Stites’s Appellate Advocacy group. Ms. Breetz is a graduate of the University of Chicago and the University of Michigan Law School. After law school, she served as law clerk to Kentucky Supreme Court Justices Charles Leibson and Nicholas King, before she joined Stites in 1997. Ms. Breetz has been the chair of the Appellate Rules Subcommittee since the Subcommittee was created by the Kentucky Supreme Court. She is also a member of the Civil Rules Committee. Ms. Breetz was elected as the first chair of the Kentucky Bar Association’s Appellate Advocacy Section when that section was established in 2007, and she has been active in the section since that time. She is a past chair of the Louisville Bar Association’s Appellate Section. She has been selected as a Best Lawyers in America® for Appellate Practice for the past 13 years, and has been a Best Lawyers in America® Lawyer of the Year for Appellate Practice; she has also been a Louisville Magazine Top Lawyer for Appellate Law, a Litigation Star in Benchmark Litigation magazine, and a Kentucky Super Lawyer®.

 

Kevin C. Burke is a founding partner of Burke Neal, PLLC. His practice focuses on appellate advocacy, but he also advises small and medium size firm practitioners on briefing, preservation, and strategic considerations before appeal. Before founding the firm, Mr. Burke maintained a solo practice where he litigated in state and federal trial and appellate courts. He has earned the Martindale-Hubbell® AV-Preeminent® Peer-Review Rating, Best Lawyers in America® designation and the 2021 Lawyer of the Year Award in Appellate Practice, Super Lawyers® designation, and the Top Lawyer designation from Louisville Magazine. In 2013, Mr. Burke was awarded the Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award from the Kentucky Bar Association. In 2010 and 2012, he was awarded the Outstanding Board Member of the Year Award by the Kentucky Justice Association. Mr. Burke serves on the Board of the Kentucky Justice Association and has done so continuously since 2009. He is past chair of KJA’s Amicus Curiae Committee and currently serves as its advisor. He also serves on the Louisville Bar Foundation and the Kentucky Supreme Court Appellate Rules Committee. He is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law.
