The American Constitution Society and the LBA’s Appellate Law Section invite you to their 10th Annual U.S. Supreme Court Review CLE program. The seminar will address the key cases before the U.S. Supreme Court during October Term 2021. The court will recap key opinions from the previous year, discuss any new or continuing trends at the Court, and preview the upcoming Term.

Speakers include: 

Michael Abate, Partner, Kaplan Johnson Abate & Bird, LLP. Mr. Abate is an experienced litigator who has practiced at all levels of the federal court system. He began his career in the U.S. Department of Justice handling the United States’ most sensitive constitutional, statutory, and administrative law cases. He then joined a large regional law firm in Louisville where he became the chair of the firm’s appellate practice group. He has briefed and argued cases for his clients all across the country, including in eleven different U.S. Courts of Appeals, the Kentucky Supreme Court, and the Kentucky Court of Appeals. He also has briefed numerous cases in the U.S. Supreme Court at both the certiorari and merits stages. He is a graduate of Stanford Law School and Harvard College.

Heather Gatnarek, Attorney, ACLU of Kentucky. Ms. Gatnarek has litigated numerous constitutional issues of importance to Kentuckians, including reproductive and civil rights cases. She has extensive experience litigating criminal cases, including capital defense. She is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center and Boston College.

Prof. Stephen I. Vladeck, Charles Alan Wright Chair in Federal Courts at UT Austin. Prof. Vladeck is a nationally recognized expert on the federal courts, constitutional law, national security law, and military justice. Professor Vladeck has argued over a dozen cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Texas Supreme Court, and various lower federal civilian and military courts; has testified before numerous congressional committees and Executive Branch agencies and commissions; has served as an expert witness both in U.S. state and federal courts and in foreign tribunals; and has received numerous awards for his influential and widely cited legal scholarship, his prolific popular writing, his teaching, and his service to the legal profession. He is a graduate of Yale Law School and Amherst College.

Elizabeth Wydra, President, Constitutional Accountability Center. Ms. Wydra is a nationally recognized legal expert who has filed hundreds of briefs on behalf of her clients in the Supreme Court and other courts across the country on a wide range of constitutional questions. She has appeared as a legal expert on NBC, ABC, PBS, CNN, C-SPAN, Fox News, BBC, and NPR, among other outlets. She also has been quoted extensively by, and/or written pieces for, The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, Politico, CNN.com, Slate, Reuters, Huffington Post, SCOTUSblog, and ACS blog, the UCLA Journal of Environmental Law & Policy, Syracuse Law Review, The Cato Institute’s Supreme Court Review, and the Yale Journal of International Law. She is a graduate of Yale Law School and Claremont McKenna College.
