Wrongful Convictions: When Justice Goes Awry

This seminar will highlight factors that can lead to wrongful convictions (coerced confessions, uncorroborated eyewitness/jailhouse “snitch” testimony, mishandling of DNA evidence, police/prosecutorial misconduct, etc.). Topics will also include what is involved in seeking to overturn a wrongful conviction and what civil remedies are available to one wrongfully convicted.

Edwin Chandler will relate his personal experience of being wrongfully convicted of manslaughter in the 2nd degree and robber in the first degree., spending nine years in prison before new evidence turned up that exonerated him. The new evidence was discovered by LMPD Detective Sgt. Denny Butler and Kentucky Innocence Project.
